Con el cuarto clásico de surf anual de punta Sayulita comenzando hoy, Viernes 8 de Marzo, pensamos que sería un buen momento para hablar de tablas de surf. Así que allá vamos.
Estos días, en el agua y en la playa, en Sayulita y en casi todas las playas surfistas del mundo, encontrará una variedad sorprendente de tablas. Érase una vez, una época en la que todos montaban tablas largas de una quilla. Después, todos montaban tablas cortas más rápidas, y básicamente las tablas largas fueron resagados a las afueras de la historia del surf, solo para re-emerger triunfantes, montadas por reyes del estilo retro.
Hoy, el debate básico de las tablas cortas y largas, o dilema o como sea que quiera llamarlo, es algo irrelevante, debido a las innovaciones que han dado a los surfos una variedad sorprendente de herramientas para montar olas de las cuales escoger, cada forma y estilo ofrecen una variación de cómo montar una ola. Han visto esto, caminando las calles de Sayulita o cualquier pueblo playero. Tablas cortas y largas. Una, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco quillas. Colas de golondrina. Colas punteadas y narices redondas, colas redondas y narices punteadas. Incluso las tablas sin quilla hacen su regreso desde las profundidades de la historia hawaiana. Una multitud de cubiertas suaves desde las bonitas tablas infantiles hasta enormes tablas de 11 o 12 pies para que personas grandes aprendan, han entrado en juego, herramientas perfectas para los principiantes. No hay reglas, ni argumentos, no hay molestias, al menos no por los estilos de las tablas: todos montan lo que quieren, y si no son muy sucios en las olas, no bloquean olas, no se interponen y no arruinan las olas para otros surfos, bueno cualquiera es libre de montar cualquier tabla de su elección.
Aquí lo puede ver en el agua todos los días: locales de cualquier edad y nivel de habilidad, montando cualquier tipo de tabla imaginable, de las alaias sin quillas hasta las tablas largas de 11 pies. La verdad es que, muchos surfos de estos dias, especialmente profesionales, tienen una colección de hasta 20 o 30 o más tablas para uso personal, y qué tabla usan cada día, depende del humor, condiciones de las olas, tamaño de las olas, fuerza del viento, y otras variables.
Pasamos un rato con Joshua Howdeshell y Marilee Woolace, que tienen la tienda de surf clásico, Quiverito, para tomar una breve lección de formas y estilos, y también para fotografiar algunas de las varias y bonitas tablas clásicas que ofrecen a la venta y/o a la renta. Para toda la variedad existente, las tablas de surf vienen en tres tipos básicos. Primero, la tabla larga, la clásica tabla de la vieja escuela, más de 8 pies y 6 pulgadas de largo, usualmente entre 9 y 11 pies de longitud. Mientras que en los viejos tiempos, las tablas largas tenían solo una quilla, actualmente suelen tener tres con la opción de remover dos y quedarse con una. Después vienen las tablas cortas, que tomaron por asalto el mundo del surf a partir de los 70s, y permanecen siendo las tablas de elección para aquellos que buscan el surfeo en su nivel más desafiante. Estas tablas usualmente tienen 5 o 6 pies de largo con una nariz punteada y tres quillas. También de les conoce como thrusters, aunque existen muchas variaciones de la forma básica. Finalmente está la funboard, que es esencialmente una tabla larga corta.
Hay una miríada de variaciones de estos tipos básicos, algunos de los cuales puede ver en las fotografías. Una variación no vista aquí es la forma de pistola, diseñada para surfear olas más grandes y rápidas que las que usualmente vemos aquí (Puerto Escondido y la Isla de Todos Santos son dos olas mexicanas que requieren forma de pistola). Lo que ve aquí con las usuales tablas cortas y largas, son huevos, que son tablas largas redondeadas y super divertidas para aprender; las tablas con forma de pescado, que por lo general son menores a 7 pies y tienen una cola con forma de golondrina y generalmente son montadas con 2, 3, 4, o 5 quillas; y algunas variaciones únicas de la colección de Quiverito. Finalmente, está la alaia, la mítica tabla hawaiana, que todos los surfos modernos están aprendiendo a montar para honrar las raíces del surf, y también por que es increíblemente retador el montar una tabla de madera sin quillas.
El número y localización de las quillas, el grosor de los rieles, las formas de la nariz y la cola, la cantidad de rocker (la curva cóncava de cola a nariz), los materiales básicos de construcción (epoxy, espuma y fibra de vidrio), y otros numerosos factores entran en juego cuando se habla de diseño de tablas. Cada tipo de tabla trabaja mejor en cada tipo diferente de ola, más rápidas, más lentas, más grandes, más pequeñas, más blandas o más huecas, que rompen en punta, que rompen en la arena, que rompen en las rocas.
Para los principiantes, una tabla de buen tamaño y de cubierta suave es la más fácil y segura para aprender. Ya que ha aprendido algo de lo básico, puede escoger; si está realmente decidido a convertirse en un destroza olas, una tabla corta, o convertirse en un crucero y tomar una tabla larga (aunque hay muchas tablas cortas destrozando en estos días). Mi recomendación para los principiantes, si es mayor de 30 años, a menos que sea increíblemente atlético y determinado -y tiene mucho tiempo para aprender- una tabla larga es la mejor. Si es menor a 30, y tiene una temporada o dos para aprender en un playa surfista, obtenga una tabla corta y aprenda a destrozar. De cualquier forma se divertirá.
