Bueno, no cualquier Domingo, pero el Domingo 27 de Enero, se podría decir que la máquina vacacional que es Sayulita estaba trabajado a toda marcha. Tuvimos olas grandes y perfectas a la derecha, en el punto de quiebre del pueblo, en la mañana, y aunque estaba abarrotado, había tantas olas llegando -¡con una generosa crecida que los dioses del mar nos enviaron!- que era muy difícil no agarrar una ola. Yo mismo -y admito ser cauteloso con las ocupadas aguas del quiebre del pueblo, con su revoltosa tripulación de super surfos locales, y principiantes cargando con entusiasmo tras las mismas olas- agarré por lo menos una docena de olas en una hora, y eso es decir algo, en una cálida mañana dominical con una sólida crecida.
Y sólida era, con olas bien formadas derramándose todo el día, la marea no importaba. En la playa, las multitudes playeras hicieron lo que las multitudes playeras hacen, felices como el diablo: cocinarse con el perfectamente cálido pero no muy caliente sol; mirar a los surfos en acción; mirar a los muchos perros agradables y únicos de Sayulita, verse los unos a los otros traviesamente pero con cautela, preguntándose quién fue el mejor perro esta semana; vea a las chicas pasar, y los chicos, y los niños, y el hombre de los helados, y el que vende las donas, o camarones en banderilla, o cocos fríos, o papalotes, mantas, gafas oscuras, brazaletes, hierba, joyería, cerámica, tamales, tatuajes temporales, o hamacas, cada uno de estos vendedores estoicamente afables ante el rechazo. No, gracias. Después de cinco años de verlos caminar, siempre esperanzados, cargando sus productos, me pregunto cómo lo hacen, año con año, pero lo hacen. Así que denles a estos vendedores algo de respeto, incluso si llegan a ser molestos. No parece ser muy divertido, ¿verdad? Seguramente encontrará en su corazón la bondad para comprar una escultura de un alce hecha a mano de 30cm de altura. En serio, algunas de sus cosas son fenomenales, y dignas de un lugar en su hogar o su cuerpo. O en su cuerpo -alguna de esa comida playera es deliciosa. Tome un buen vistazo, o una buena probada.
El día progresó, y aquellos de nosotros que vivimos aquí tal vez nos deslizamos a casa para trabajar un poco, o tomar una siesta y contemplar las aves en los árboles y la suerte que tenemos, de vivir aquí. Ese fui yo, el Domingo, tomando una corta, bien merecida, muy necesitada siesta, después de los trabajos de una dura sesión matutina de surf. Después de todo, me caí varias veces, en medio de una u otra maniobra radical o tonta, y muchas veces una ola grande rompió sobre mi cabeza. La vida puede ser dura aquí también, algunas veces.
Y después, como a las 5 pm o algo así, mi esposa y fotógrafa, Donna Day, y yo, volvimos a la playa para ver como se desvanecía el día. La neblina a la deriva, la marea había salido y regresaba a toda velocidad, la luz del ocaso iluminando todos los hermosos cuerpos de la playa, y fue un… bueno, un final del día perfecto en Sayulita. A las seis el sol ya había bajado bastante, y las olas a la izquierda, afuera del lado norte de la desembocadura del río, se formaban hermosamente, y vimos cómo un pequeño grupo maniobraba para posicionarse y montar la cabeza de olas altas perfecta. Nuestra amiga Kirsten, que solía ser bombero, combatiendo incendios forestales en Idaho y Montana, estaba allí afuera en su tabla larga, su melena rubia volando en la brisa costa afuera. Nuestro amigo Terry del Hotel Buena Onda, agarró unas cuantas en su ala de avión de madera que tiene por tabla, diseñada y construida por Andy de Vancouver, que va y viene por temporadas, haciendo tablas y montando olas. Él estaba allí afuera también, y si quiere aprender cómo hacer una tabla de madera a mano, él le enseña. Déjeme saber y los pongo en contacto. Los clientes de Donna, de una boda que fotografiará en unos meses, estaban en el Club Camarón como DJs invitados, marcando un buen set de música reggae y world, música perfecta para montar olas mientras el sol bajaba como un feliz y gordo limón manchado a través del cielo en Punta Sayulita.
Nunca había visto a 500 o más personas despreocupadas, excepto tal ves anteayer, o fue mañana, mismos lugares, mismas horas. De esto se trata Sayulita. Un perfecto y cálido Domingo en medio del invierno, olas, luz, agua, música, por encima de toda felicidad. La alegría de… bueno, simplemente existir en este tiempo y lugar. Otro Domingo en Sayulita. Lo dije antes, y lo diré de nuevo: hemos sido bendecidos al estar aquí y ahora en Sayulita.
