En los últimos años, los Huicholes se han convertido en una presencia ubicua en Sayulita, inconfundibles en sus brillantes atuendos multicolor. Crean y venden obras de arte, joyería y ropa decorativa en sus puestos al lado de Choco Banana y otros lugares en el pueblo. Todos reconocemos los vívidos colores instantáneamente, las formas orgánicas, las serpientes, venados, maíz, Hikuri y otros símbolos en los trabajos de chakiras o las representaciones de hilo y otros trabajos creados por estos enigmáticos hombres y mujeres. Mientras que la inspiración y la estética subyacente son evidentes, permanecen arraigados en la vision Huichol del mundo -cada animal, objeto, forma y color tienen un significado espiritual- las artesanías se han convertido en productos comerciales, y frecuentemente los artistas utilizan chakiras manufacturadas en lugar de los objetos naturales -hueso, arcilla, piedra, turquesa, jade y semillas- que usaban antes. Si embargo esto no ha disminuido la energía visual tan atrayente del trabajo. Hoy, vender estas piezas se ha convertido en el medio principal para sobrevivir económicamente en el mundo moderno.
Antes de esta inevitable y necesaria comercialización, el arte Huichol expresaba (y aún lo hace) una visión de la realidad distinta a la nuestra, enrraizada en una relación con el mundo natural chamanística y pre-tecnológica. Es fácil construir una fantasía acerca de esta tribu, ya que son más exóticos y extranjeros que cualquier mestizo mexicano que se puede observar en la calle -ya que la mayoría de los mexicanos visten, conducen, surfean y comen comida chatarra y miran televisión como el resto del mundo “civilizado”. Incluso los gitanos de Sayulita, los hippies de Argentina y Londres y Guadalajara y otros puntos en la brújula vagabunda, con tatuajes, rastas y piercings, con atrapa sueños y joyería a la venta, son tipos reconocibles. Persiguiendo su libertad, estos personajes y su especie han recorrido el mundo por los últimos cuarenta años.
Los Huicholes son diferentes. Vienen de un mundo diferente. Un tiempo diferente, un tiempo antes de la televisión, el internet y la música pop, y aviones de propulsión -mientras que muchos de ellos montan en autobús, o hablan por teléfonos celulares y probablemente ven televisión; en muchas maneras, ellos todavía viven en una realidad diferente. Cuando bajan de la sierra, vienen desde muy lejos. Lo puede ver en sus ojos.
Durante décadas, los Huicholes han luchado, como muchas otras tribus indígenas, para mantener su cultura, y mitigar los efectos corrosivos de la civilización occidental en su manera de vivir. La suya es una cultura que se ha mantenido casi intacta, debido en alguna medida a su aislamiento físico en las montañas de Nayarit y Jalisco, a las cuales se han retirado después de la llegada de los españoles -pero hoy este modo de vida está bajo asedio, amenazado por las tentaciones de la cultura contemporánea: los medios, drogas, promiscuidad, alcohol, y todas las demás influencias que han probado ser desastrosas para las tribus indígenas de todo el continente Americano en sus tres divisiones.
Hay muchas personas que han dedicado sus vidas a ayudar a las varias tribus nativas del continente; una de ellos es Susana Valadez, una antropóloga estadounidense que ha estado trabajando y viviendo con los Huicholes por décadas. En 1981 Valadez y sus compatriotas huicholes fundaron el Centro Huichol para la Supervivencia Cultural en Huejuquilla el Alto, en la sierras de Jalisco, que hoy continúa a servir su propósito original de encontrar maneras de disminuir la amenaza de la extinción cultural de los Huicholes. Para este fin, la gente del centro está ayudando a los artistas Huicholes a crear y vender su trabajo; recopilan y archivan el conocimiento espiritual y botánico de los chamanes; y enseñan a los niños Huicholes a usar las computadoras. Están ayudando a guiarlos en el mundo moderno, y preservando eso que mantiene su cultura separada, única e intacta.
Aquí al nivel del mar; en el centro, opera la galería sin ánimo de lucro Tanana, donde puede encontrar una variedad impresionante de artesanías Huicholes -no solo representaciones de hilo, también máscaras, estatuas, joyería de todos tipos, y una selección de playeras decoradas con hermosas y brillantemente coloridas imágenes Huicholes. No todas la imágenes del arte Huichol moderno vienen de su mitología, pero eso no quiere decir que el trabajo no sea auténtico. Es sólo que, el mundo ha invadido su mundo, e inevitablemente han absorbido algo de él. Por lo tanto, venden playeras, no son exactamente tradicionales -pero las imágenes en la playera son reales.
