Cuando de herrajes en puertas y ventanas se trata, tendemos a pensar primero, en términos de seguridad y luego en términos de estética. En Sayulita encontramos, definitivamente, un nivel artístico involucrado en la creación de estos componentes para la seguridad, hechos a mano. Los tipos que hacen estas cosas se enorgullecen de su trabajo, lo cual se nota. Sus diseños no son necesariamente sofisticados, pero son interesantes de observar, cuando se tiene tiempo de mirar en los detalles. Cuando lo hagas, descubrirás una belleza real en los herrajes de puertas y ventanas.
Como muchos otros oficios en México, la creación de herrajes es un proceso extenuante, sucio, y generalmente sencillo. Tipos con sopletes de soldaduras trabajan en talleres al aire libre, con poco ningún equipo de seguridad. La falta de regulaciones y la calidad informal de estos negocios tiene sus desventajas, pero ayuda a mantener los precios extremadamente bajos, para los estándares americanos.
Mi amigo Jack Kearny, que recientemente nos visitó desde Seattle, tiene un taller donde el y un equipo de 7 empleados de tiempo completo diseñan y construyen puertas de metal, ventanas y mesas, entre otras piezas, usualmente de su propia inspiración o a partir de los disenos de un arquitecto o de un diseñador industrial. Cuando le dije el costo del hierro y las puertas de cristal que hicimos diseñar e instalar en nuestra casa (sí, por razones de seguridad) el año pasado, él solo se rió. “Por ese precio no hubiera conseguido ni siquiera los materiales” dijo. Los materiales cuestan mucho más allá, y aquí hay muchos costos que se suelen dejar de lado, como seguro, equipo de seguridad, herramientas de trabajo, etc., etc.
Para bien o para mal, el estilo libre-para-todo mantiene los precios bajos. Acaso no los sabemos todos, y tomamos ventaja de ello, con nuestras trabajadoras domésticas, jardineros, electricistas, y demás. Puedes regatear tanto como puedas a tus trabajadores, y sea cual sea el precio que acuerden, reconoce que es un buen trato y no te quejes cuando la trabajadora doméstica pida un aumento, para mejorar sus 4 dólares la hora o la cantidad que le pagues.
Los materiales y la mano de obra son más baratos aquí. No cabe duda que las instalaciones de metal pueden ser rugosas, menos finas, sin la calidad en los detalles que esperarías encontrar en revistas de diseño americanas o europeas. Pero en cierta forma, en Sayulita, uno llega a entender, o aceptar, que aquí las cosas se hacen diferente. No tan perfectamente terminadas, tal vez, pero tome un tour por nuestra colección de encantadoras, rústicas y bien logradas ventanas de acero, cortinas y puertas. Son un trabajo fino, hecho para durar.
